Can Second Life Help Autistic Patients?

People with Autism have excruciating anxiety in social situations. Cognitive neuroscientist Sandra Bond Chapman, PhD, is working with people that have Autism to help them with a virtual platform that help their ability to communicate more comfortably and effectively with other people.
This is what the area that the patients would go.
These avatars are at an event for Autism.

With the therapist’s guidance, patients enter a protected area in Second Life that has been designed to help them practice communicating in realistic situations. The area in Second Life is secure so that the patients cannot enter into the main part of Second Life because that may be overwhelming to them. Patients and therapists create virtual representations of themselves as an avatar. The therapist then enters the room only if the patient needs help.
I think that this is really interesting because I had never thought of using Second Life in this way before. I think that it is wonderful to use this tool as long as it is beneficial to the patient.
